The City of Markham is located in the York Region within the Greater Toronto Area in Southern Ontario. The community has over 340,000 residents, making it the fourth most populous city in the GTA, after Brampton, Mississauga, and Toronto. Markham is also the 16th largest city in the nation.

Living in Markham

History of Markham

The first settlements in Vaughan came about in 1792 when the townships were created. Prior to this, the region was occupied by the Huron-Wendat people.

The first European in the area was Etienne Brule, a French explorer traversing the Humber Trail in 1615. But Vaughan was considered to be very remote with no roads through the region, which made travelling very hard. But in 1783, a British Commissioner, Benjamin Vaughan, signed a peace treaty with the US and gave the township its name.

Though the early settlers had to endure many hardships, the population grew significantly fast, from 54 people (including 30 children) in 1800 to 4,300 people in just 4 decades. During this time, many families moved into the region, including Pennsylvania Germans, British families, and French Royalists.

While most of the first immigrants were agriculturalists, many of the families of English descent that came after 1814 comprised highly skilled tradespeople who played a big role in growing the community. But in the nearly 100 years between 1840 and 1935, the population of Vaughan grew very little to only 4,873 residents.

After the Second World War, there was an influx of immigration with the arrival of different groups including Jewish people, Eastern Europeans, and Italians, among others, causing the population to reach 16,000 in 1960.

In 1850, the town was incorporated as Vaughan Township and a municipal government formed. The township later merged with the Village of Woodbridge, giving rise to the Town of Vaughan, which later changed its legal status in 1991 to become the City of Vaughan.

Vaughan boasts a stable economy, and has frequently ranked as one of the best three performing economies in Canada. Strategically situated in the country’s economic centre, Vaughan continues to establish itself as the hub for economic activity in the GTA with great access to international markets.

The economic success of Vaughan City is partly due to the strong population growth. The city has an abundance of well educated, savvy, and affluent residents who generate considerable demand for the increasingly varied selection of products and services. Vaughan boasts a young, multicultural, and talented labour force that say the city lead all Canadian municipalities in job creation between 2001 and 2006 with a 22.2 percent increase.
