Are you going away for sumÂmer vacaÂtion? Don’t leave your home unproÂtectÂed! BurÂglars are lookÂing for vacant homes, espeÂcialÂly durÂing the sumÂmer when famÂiÂlies travÂel. Your home could become a tarÂget if you don’t take the right steps before retirÂing. Use this simÂple vacaÂtion checkÂlist to strengthÂen your home secuÂriÂty and deter burÂglars away from your propÂerÂty.
1. Don’t let mail or packages pile up.
A pile of uncolÂlectÂed mail or packÂages indiÂcates nobody has been home for a while. That’s exactÂly what burÂglars want to see! Before you leave, have your mail paused or rediÂrectÂed, and conÂsidÂer canÂcelling the delivÂery of any packÂages. AlterÂnaÂtiveÂly, ask a friend or neighÂbour to colÂlect everyÂthing while you’re gone.
2. Let a neighbour know you’ll be gone.
Even if you don’t need your mail colÂlectÂed, informÂing at least one trustÂed neighÂbour that you’ll be gone is a good idea. So if they see any activÂiÂty on your propÂerÂty, they’ll know it’s susÂpiÂcious. Let the neighÂbour know what dates you’re leavÂing and returnÂing, and proÂvide a phone numÂber where you can be reached.
3. Keep your lawn mowed.
An unkempt yard is anothÂer sign to burÂglars that the home is probÂaÂbly vacant. Have someÂone mow the grass for you while you’re gone. And if you’ll be gone for an extendÂed periÂod, ensure any shrubÂbery is mainÂtained as well.
4. Use timers or smart lights.
SchedÂule some lights to actiÂvate autoÂmatÂiÂcalÂly so the home doesn’t appear dark and vacant. This can be done with inexÂpenÂsive timers or InterÂnet-conÂnectÂed smart lights/bulbs. If a would-be burÂglar sees that a light is on, they’ll be likeÂliÂer to skip your house and look for a comÂpleteÂly dark one.
5. Close and lock all doors and windows.
This tip may seem obviÂous, but you’d be surÂprised how many famÂiÂlies acciÂdenÂtalÂly leave a winÂdow open or a back door unlocked on vacaÂtion. Before you go, take the time to check every entry point and winÂdow to ensure they are secureÂly closed and locked.
6. Arm your home security system.
HopeÂfulÂly, you already do this every time you leave home, but it’s essenÂtial before travÂelÂling. If your home secuÂriÂty sysÂtem is trigÂgered, the alarm will help to scare off intrudÂers, and authorÂiÂties can be alertÂed by your alarm monÂiÂtorÂing cenÂter.
7. Turn on your security cameras.
If you have secuÂriÂty camÂeras, ensure they are actiÂvatÂed and funcÂtionÂing propÂerÂly before leavÂing. If your camÂeras have a motion-actiÂvaÂtion feaÂture, ensure it’s enabled so you’ll be alertÂed if any activÂiÂty is detectÂed.
While you’re on vacaÂtion, the last thing you want is to worÂry about your home being broÂken into. Use the tips above to secure your home before leavÂing, so you can relax and enjoy your time away!
