Spring is here, and we are only weeks away from the first long weekÂend of the seaÂson. What’s more fun than some fireÂworks from the local variÂety store to celÂeÂbrate a holÂiÂday at the cotÂtage or backÂyard?
The vibrant colours and eye-catchÂing bursts can make you forÂget how danÂgerÂous they can be. HowÂevÂer, there have been many unforÂtuÂnate inciÂdents. For examÂple, About 50 peoÂple north of MonÂtreÂal, Que., got a soberÂing reminder of the danÂgers involved in FireÂworks.
DurÂing the fesÂtivÂiÂties, peoÂple in TerÂreÂbonne, Que., set off fireÂworks in a backÂyard. One of the colourÂful exploÂsives hit the roof of a nearÂby home under conÂstrucÂtion. The flames spread rapidÂly, damÂagÂing six homes and causÂing about $1 milÂlion in damÂages. LuckÂiÂly, no one was hurt as 49 fireÂfightÂers batÂtled the fire.
This is why the ExploÂsives Act, adminÂisÂtered by the ExploÂsives RegÂuÂlaÂtoÂry DiviÂsion (ERD) of NatÂurÂal Resources CanaÂda, restricts the sale and purÂchase of fireÂworks and recÂomÂmends safeÂty preÂcauÂtions.
CanaÂda allows fireÂworks in two catÂeÂgories: disÂplay and famÂiÂly or conÂsumer. DisÂplay fireÂworks can only be set off by expeÂriÂenced, licensed adults and crowd superÂviÂsion is mandaÂtoÂry. OrgaÂnizÂers need a perÂmit. AccordÂing to the CanaÂda SafeÂty CounÂcil, more than 16,500 CanaÂdiÂans are licensed to conÂduct exhiÂbiÂtion demonÂstraÂtions.
FamÂiÂly or conÂsumer fireÂworks are those used by the genÂerÂal pubÂlic. Some comÂmon types of these are:
Roman canÂdles, wheels, founÂtains, barÂrages, sparklers and more.
They are designed for recreÂationÂal use by the pubÂlic, but there are safeÂty proÂceÂdures that peoÂple should folÂlow.
There are ImporÂtant SafeÂty proÂceÂdures:
FolÂlow the Laws. The ERD has exploÂsive regÂuÂlaÂtions govÂernÂing the use of fireÂworks. Still, provinces, terÂriÂtoÂries or cities may have their regÂuÂlaÂtions, such as restrictÂing the purÂchase and use to cerÂtain times of the year. PeoÂple must be at least 18 years of age to purÂchase fireÂworks.
Buy fireÂworks only from reliÂable dealÂers. ERD has lists of authoÂrized manÂuÂfacÂturÂers in CanaÂda and abroad. A bilinÂgual label is anothÂer indiÂcaÂtion that fireÂworks are authoÂrized. Do not use or smugÂgle fireÂworks from anothÂer counÂtry because the qualÂiÂty is quesÂtionÂable, and they may be a safeÂty hazÂard. MakÂing your fireÂworks is not recÂomÂmendÂed.
Store fireÂworks propÂerÂly. Please keep them in a cool, dry place away from chilÂdren. Check to see if there are any speÂcial hanÂdling instrucÂtions. Ten kiloÂgrams gross weight is the maxÂiÂmum amount that can be stored in a dwelling. Amounts more sigÂnifÂiÂcant than that must be kept in a sepÂaÂrate, locked buildÂing.
TransÂportaÂtion. FireÂworks must be transÂportÂed in a vehiÂcle’s trunk, not the pasÂsenÂger comÂpartÂment. If your vehiÂcle doesÂn’t have a trunk, put them in a conÂtainÂer with a lid. Please do not smoke while loadÂing, transÂportÂing or unloadÂing them.
GetÂting startÂed
Set-up. Use fireÂworks outÂdoors, nevÂer indoors. That goes for sparklers, too. The CanaÂda SafeÂty CounÂcil says sparklers can burn as hot as 650 F and recÂomÂmends they be used outÂdoors — on a driÂveÂway, sideÂwalk or anothÂer fire-resisÂtant surÂface. It recÂomÂmends sparklers be used under adult superÂviÂsion. Once they’ve burned, they should be doused and placed immeÂdiÂateÂly in a metÂal conÂtainÂer. The counÂcil recÂomÂmends not subÂstiÂtutÂing sparklers for canÂdles on a cake.
Choose a clear, open area. The area should be far away from buildÂings, vehiÂcles, overÂhead obstrucÂtions and dry brush or grass. There should be a minÂiÂmum clear area of 30 metres by 30 metres for aerÂiÂal famÂiÂly fireÂworks, like roman canÂdles, and 20 metres by 20 metres for founÂtains and othÂer ground-based fireÂworks.
Check for wind. FireÂworks should be lit with the winds blowÂing away from specÂtaÂtors. If winds are strong, do not set off fireÂworks.
Have water nearÂby. A buckÂet or a filled hose should be kept nearÂby in case of emerÂgency.
Read all instrucÂtions. DirecÂtions for each of the prodÂucts should be read in advance.
Use ground-based fireÂworks on a hard surÂface. Ground-based fireÂworks, like founÂtains, should be lit on a hard, flat surÂface to make sure they are staÂble. On grass, plyÂwood should be laid down first.
Bury aerÂiÂal fireÂworks. For roman canÂdles, bury (do not pile) the device half its length in the ground or a large pail or box filled with earth or sand.
Keep specÂtaÂtors safe. All onlookÂers should be at least 20 metres away from the disÂplays.
SetÂting off fireÂworks
Use propÂer eye proÂtecÂtion and clothÂing. Wear safeÂty gogÂgles or safeÂty glassÂes. RegÂuÂlar glassÂes or sunÂglassÂes do not proÂvide adeÂquate proÂtecÂtion and could potenÂtialÂly make injuries worse. Wear non-flamÂmaÂble clothÂing such as cotÂton. Do not wear synÂthetÂic fabÂrics such as nylon or polyÂester.
Keep chilÂdren away. Do not let chilÂdren hanÂdle or play with them, even sparklers.
Use care when hanÂdling fireÂworks. Do not drop them or smoke while hanÂdling them. Do not carÂry them in your pockÂets.
Use care when setÂting off fireÂworks. Only one perÂson should be in charge of lightÂing fireÂworks. Do not put any part of your body over fireÂworks or touch them with your hands when lightÂing fireÂworks. NevÂer point or throw them at peoÂple. DurÂing the show, keep unused fireÂworks away from the firÂing area and covÂer them to keep from setÂting them off by acciÂdent.
Duds or misÂfires. NevÂer try to re-light fireÂworks that have misÂfired. Wait 30 minÂutes, then dunk them in a buckÂet of water.
Clean up afterÂwards. Wait half an hour after the show has finÂished. Then check the area for duds and clean up debris. Recheck the folÂlowÂing day.
And finalÂly, rememÂber that while you enjoy fireÂworks, your neighÂbours may not. In an urban setÂting be mindÂful of your neighÂbours. FireÂworks can scare small chilÂdren and pets. AlcoÂhol and fireÂworks don’t mix, don’t drink and work with these items. Check with your neighÂbours and a neighÂbourÂhood assoÂciÂaÂtion before proÂceedÂing. You might be able to pool your resources for a safe, enjoyÂable show for the entire comÂmuÂniÂty.
