Business Door Locks
Is it time to purchase new Locks? Big box stores have entire aisles filled with various security door locks. How does the consumer know what a good value lock with good security features is?
PROTECTION PLUS® can help!
- You can determine quality levels by learning some primary language of the lock industry.
- Lock quality is assessed by “Grade”. Grade One is the highest quality. The higher the “grade” number, the lower the quality. Typically, Grade One locks are sold by Locksmiths and security companies. Most big box stores sell Grade 3 door locks, knob sets and deadbolts. These are mass-produced locks made with low standards and cheaper internal components, including plastic and nylon. They have minimal protection from abuse, heat, or common burglary tricks like lock picking, key bumping, or drilling. In many cases, they also cannot be repaired or upgraded; they are sealed units and are more or less disposable. These are the typical “builder” installed locks, low cost with minimal security features.
- The lack of key Security is another major weakness in many lower-grade locks commonly sold in Big Box stores. The cheapest locks can be, in essence, rekeyed by inserting a blank key and tapping the cylinder; the tumblers inside will align with the new key. This allows a quick burglar entry with no sign of forced entry. High-Security Grade One locks use different technology, such as side pins or ball bearings, to prevent this tampering.
- Key Control takes Security to another level. The ability to control who can duplicate a key is an important step forward in Security. Sometimes we all lend out keys, perhaps to a neighbour or contractor. With key control, only an authorized person with I.D. can duplicate the key from an authorized dealer, not the corner store. Key Control can stop at simply limiting duplication, or it can be expanded to creating a master key system allowing you to have a Master Key that can open all locks while restricting access to others door by door, lock by lock. This is an excellent solution for homes where perhaps a cleaning service gets access to a side door but not the home office. And businesses where a manager has a Master key with full access, but employees are limited to specific doors and locks.
- Check your local fire code for restrictions. We get plenty of requests for deadbolts that are keyed on both sides. In many jurisdictions, this is not permitted. In the event of a fire, do you want to make it difficult to exit? This is an example of what is not allowed in some jurisdictions; our Locksmith and consultants can assist you in ensuring you adhere to local bylaws and safety regulations.
